Event: Emitos Girls Humanist Football Team, Uganda (Thu 8th October 2009 to Thu 8th April 2010)
Alice's Personal Message:
Emitos Girls Humanist Football Club is a really special project running in Uganda. Supported by Women and the Free World Organisation (WOFEWO), the aim of the club is to empower and educate girls aged 12-20 years through football.
---------------------------------------------- OBJECTIVES ----------------------------------------------
Emitos FC seeks to:
o Build confidence and self esteem among young girls and to help them build their careers as future leaders. The players develop confidence, express their unique talents and compete with boys for the same opportunities. It encourages the attitude “If I can play football, what else can I achieve?"
o Deepen the girls' understanding of the humanistic values and principles such as the importance of reason, self discipline, achievement and courage, and controlling one’s own destiny. This will help the players to transform their lives as young women and the societies they come from.
o Train girls in management and leadership skills. Through experience managing tournaments, matches and their role in the team, the girls learn to manage the activities in life more widely.
o Educate girls on issues of sexual and reproductive health. The players are at an age particularly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS and good need health education is needed to avoid unsafe sex and early pregnancies.
o Help girls to stay in school for longer. Girls football is such an interesting and exciting adventure in Uganda, which one would not like to miss. Hence, while at school, football makes every moment of their lives precious and exciting.
o Help girls learn to socialise with other adolescents from other schools. This will teach them to deal with the challenges they encounter in their adolescent life. They need to share everyday life experiences with friends and to belong to significant communities of interaction, inquiry, work and play.
-------------------------------------------- ACHIEVEMENTS --------------------------------------------
The club began in July 2008 and has been steadily developing since. The Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) has provided the club with a professional coach and the club has participated in two important tournaments enabling the club to play with experienced teams and players to improve upon their skills.
The club has started to achieve the objectives laid out above. Agali Saphinah, a 15 year old Emitos player, hints at some of the outcomes of the club's work:
"Emitos has taught me to make wise decisions. Through the different workshops, seminars and camps, we are empowered to face challenging situations especially in our adolescent lives. Emitos activities occupy most of my free time especially during the holidays. Instead of getting bad friends or being redundant, I attend Emitos activities. This has kept me safe from HIV and unwanted pregnancy. Emitos made me realize that I am capable of doing things that are done by boys and therefore, boys are not superior. I can compete with them in all aspects. " - quote provided by the club manager, November 2009

---------------------------------------------- CHALLENGES ----------------------------------------------
Despite its progress, Emitos FC is faced with several challenges:
o Emitos lacks sufficient playing equipment to widen the scope of its activities. The available equipment is not enough because of the increasing number of girls who want to participate.
o Football can involve expenses which Emitos has great difficulty in meeting. One example is the costs involved in playing away matches which requires transport, food and accommodation.
o The club also faces opposition from some parents who have mistaken ideas about girls football. Parents might be worried that the girls will lose their virginity or develop tough muscles which they say will limit their chances of getting married because they are no longer tender. Emitos has mangaged to counter this to an extent by sending newsletters to parents explaining what their girls are achieving at the club, but funds are needed to extend such activities.
o The club would like to provide continuous counselling for the girls who are eager to be treated as adults but often are unaware of the threats adult life can bring (reproductive health responsibilities and the risk of HIV/AIDS)
----------------------------------------- HOW WE CAN HELP -----------------------------------------
Josh Kutchinsky, the Central London Humanist Group's Secretary visited Uganda for a humanist conference and met the football team and Annette Nalunga, Chair of WOFEWO, the organisation that runs the club, at a local training session. Inspired by the club, Josh discussed with Annette what the CLHG could do to support the project. You can hear this conversation and see the girls in action in the following short video:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwHVFz7hy2M
So, as suggested by Josh, the CLHG is going to help Emitos Girls Humanist FC to buy equipment, travel to tournaments, and run workshops and counselling sessions. The fundraising target is £3,700 which will be spent on:
10 Balls @ 60, 000 Ugandan Shillings (UG SHS) = 600,000 UG SHS 2 sets uniforms @ 600,000 UG SHS = 1,200,000 UG SHS 24 pairs boots @ 70,000 UG SHS = 1,680,000 UG SHS 2 sets tracksuits @ 750,000 UG SHS = 1,500,000 UG SHS Playing kits = 1,000,000 UG SHS 24 pairs stockings @ 6,000 UG SHS = 144,000 UG SHS 3 Away matches @ 500,000 UG SHS = 1,500,000 UG SHS 3 Workshops on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS @ 1,200,000 UG SHS = 3,600,000 UG SHS
TOTAL = 11,224,000 UG SHS
TOTAL IN GBP (as of Oct 09) = £3,700
I hope very much you will support this important cause by donating online via Central London Humanist Group's fundraising page.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the event of restricted funds
When you give the International Humanist Trust money via CharityGiving for the Emtios project, that money becomes restricted funds in IHT’s hands. That means that IHT can use your money for the purpose for which it was given, and nothing else. If something happened that prevents the money going to Emitos (if, for example, the Emitos project had to end before the funds were received or the CLHG’s fundraising was so successful that we made more money than Emitos could possibly make use of), some or all of the restricted funds would be ‘orphaned’. In this very unlikely scenario, your money will be donated to the Mustard Seed Secular School in Busota, eastern Uganda, a project you may have heard of via its supporter, the New Humanist magazine in the UK. I hope you agree this is a good plan B.

Emitos Girls FC training session
Alice is raising money for International Humanist Trust:
The International Humanist Trust is the charitable arm of the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU), the organisation which is helping the CLHG to transfer the money it raises to Emitos in Uganda. We are very grateful for IHEU's support and continued help in setting up the means to raise the money.
