A New Home For The Biggar Museums? The Stephens Garage Appeal Biggar Museum Trust has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase Stephens Garage in the High Street in order to create a new purpose built museum.
In Biggar Museums, we are extremely fortunate to have an enormous number of both everyday and rare objects from the past, collected mainly by Brian Lambie over more than half a century. This amazing legacy to the people of Biggar and district deserves to be rehoused, reclaimed and exhibited in modern surroundings where the collection can be fully appreciated and enjoyed by everyone.
In Stephens Garage, we have a unique opportunity to create a 21st century museum for the town and future generations. The first step is to purchase the site for £380,000. We know that many people will be eager to help Biggar Museum Trust realise this ambition and all donations will be received with gratitude.
Anyone who donates £100 (£150 for a couple) or more will have his or her name displayed in the museum.
The New Museum will bring together the best of Gladstone Court and Moat Park, but there will be many surprises. For a start, you will be able to enjoy a coffee in the Gladstone Court area – or book this space for a function( e.g. craft fairs, winetasting, art exhibitions), where guests can enjoy an ambience that spans over a 100 years of a Scottish country town.
The forecourt layout will be designed to complement the High Street as well as to attract passing visitors, who will contribute to the economy of the whole town. As a further incentive to visit, tourist information will be available in the museum Reception Area. Here, there will be models and photographs of people who have made a unique contribution to Biggar’s story. There will, of course, be a shop, providing an outlet for the amazing variety of craft goods produced locally.

We are raising money for Biggar Museum Trust:
Biggar Museum Trust oversees six of the finest small museums in Scotland, covering several centuries of Scottish history. Included in these are Moat Park Heritage Centre, Gladstone Court, Brownsbank Cottage, Greenhill Covenanters House, and Biggar Gasworks. Lamington Chapel, which is also owned by the trust, is available by appointment for special events and services.
As well as maintaining and promoting these vital sites, we also actively work with local schools and archaeological groups to help give children a hands-on appreciation of their local history.
All of the sites are available to visit, you can stroll along the 'real' Victorian streets and visit the shops at Gladstone Court, view the Menzies Moffat tapestry at Moat Park and experience the sounds and smells of Scotland's only remaining 19th century gas works.
