Joanna's Personal Message:
Hello there,
In just over 10 weeks I will be pounding the streets of New York in an attempt to complete my first ever half marathon in aid of COPARS (Childhood Cancer Organisation for Parents And Relatives Support), a very worthwhile charity which aims to alleviate the difficulties encountered by families whose child has been diagnosed with cancer (Leukaemia, Neuroblastoma ,Hodgkin's disease etc.). As well as providing support to families with children being treated on ward C2 at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, they also organise a programme of regular events for children and provide educational resources on childhood cancer. Since they are a small charity operating in one hospital, they do not have the resources to undertake far-reaching fundraising activities, which is why every penny raised really does count.
If you know me, then you know I "don't do running" unless I'm demonstrating my excellent running man to some funky 80s electro pop or making a mad dash for the last pair of size 5 ballet pumps in Kurt Gieger, so this is going to be one heck of a challenge for me!
With a mere 10 weeks to prepare I must hit the ground running (excuse the pun), and so will be blogging about my training ups and downs, and how your money will be put to good use by COPARS on this neat little site: joannaontherun.wordpress.com, so, join me on my journey to the Big Apple!
I would be very grateful for donations of any size, and as I have independent entry to the race I do not have any charity entry fee costs to cover and I will be covering all travel expenses myself, so every single penny raised will go directly to COPARS, which is an extremely important charity (more about that to your right). If you would like to come to New York and support me, then I would be extremely grateful and look forward to seeing you there!
Charity Giving will reclaim gift aid tax on your donation (if you are a UK taxpayer), meaning any donation is worth around 25% more. They also charge less than other fundraising websites, so more money goes to this great cause!
Joanna is raising money for COPARS - Childhood Cancer Org. for Parents & Relative Support:
COPARS (Childhood Cancer Organisation for Parents and Relatives Support) was launched on the 8th April 1994 after a number of parents, encouraged by staff at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, decided that a support group could offer a great deal to the families of children with cancer on Ward C2, both during and after treatment.
The committee is made up of volunteers who have themselves experienced firsthand childhood cancer and can empathise and understand the difficulties encountered by families with a very sick child.
COPARS is about providing support and friendship to families who have a child with cancer, and volunteers visit the ward to meet with families who want support. The charity also organise exciting events and activities throughout the year for all the family because even in the midst of such a difficult illness, COPARS realise it is important for children to have fun. Highlights have included summer barbecues, visits to local theme parks, Easter events and Christmas pantomimes.
The organisation exists to bring together these very special people who love and care for very special children.
COPARS aims to 1) alleviate physical, mental or financial distress or hardship of persons with childhood cancer, the family and friends of persons with childhood cancer, and persons bereaved through childhood cancer, and 2) to provide education about childhood cancer to persons with childhood cancer, the family and friends of persons with childhood cancer, persons bereaved through childhood cancer and members of the public at large.
COPARS is a registered charity and membership is free. It is basically a network of Parents, Relatives and Carers joined by the common thread of childhood cancer.
