Hi, I’m running in the Great North Run to try and raise as much money as I can to help to support education for young children in the township of Mamelodi in South Africa.
While I sadly missed the World Cup, I visited the area earlier this year and as a father of four kids myself I was amazed by poor standard living conditions for many of the children who live in the shacks and makeshift buildings that make up this unofficial settlement just outside the capital of Pretoria. The one hope children do have is to work hard and get a decent education. The teachers there do a fantastic job in the incredibly over-crowded schools with what little training, resources and support they receive. The Mamelodi Trust supports local school by providing much needed books, resources and training. So far the Mamelodi Trust has built and stocked 3 fantastic new libraries which are used by both the schools and the wider community.
The Great North Run is a half marathon (or about 16,500 steps!) so I’ll be training over the summer, if you live locally to me, look out for me in my South African football shirt running around Belper!
