Event: Lowestoft Scores Race (Sunday 13th September 2009)

Paul's Personal Message:

Thank you for taking the time to visit my fundraising page.

On 27th December 2003, I lost my brother Sean. He took his own life whilst suffering from depression. It is amazing, but it is believed that 1 in 4 people suffer from depression at some stage of their lives.

Many of you will not have heard of "The Davenport Trust", but since we lost Sean, I have been aware of them, and the work they do. They are a Norfolk based charity, and were set up following a tragic loss of life not dissimilar to our Sean. Please visit http://www.davenporttrust.org.uk/ to find out more.

In January this year, I decided to try and get myself fit! I started circuit training, and took up running, and actually managed to shed a few pounds. I soon found that I needed a target to maintain motivation, so I set my sights on being fit enough to run the Lowestoft Scores race on 13th September 2009. Well, I have now signed up for the race! We were brought up in Lowestoft and lived in The Crown Hotel at the top of Crown Score, so that particular race is very appropriate.

The Lowestoft scores race is Britain’s most easterly hill race. Whist being only 4.75 miles long, it is a gruelling task, featuring 7 steep climbs and 6 descents, and no less than 409 steps! Anybody who knows me will know that 6 months ago I could not run the length of myself, let alone take on a challenge like this one.

So I have decided to seek sponsorship for the race, in support of The Davenport Trust, in memory of Sean.

Making a donation through Charity Giving is simple.
charitygiving.co.uk is operated by The Dove Trust, a charity with over 25 years experience of helping individuals, charities and good causes globally, so your giving is safe and secure.

Charity Giving will reclaim gift aid tax on your donation (if you are a UK taxpayer), meaning any donation is worth around 25% more. They also charge less than other fundraising websites, so more money goes to this great cause!

So please sponsor me now and thanks again for your support!

The race is on Sunday 13th September 2009, and commences at 1200 in Lowestoft High Steet. I will be wearing race number 310. Do come and give your support on the day if you can.

With kind regards,
Paul

RACE UPDATE !!

I am delighted to inform you that, after months of hard training, I successfully completed "The 14th Lowestoft Scores Race", yesterday, Sunday 13th September 2009.

The race was as gruelling as I expected. However, what I did find surprising was that I did not enjoy the "race environment" as much as I thought I would. I kept getting in other folks way! I was surprised at how many people turned out to cheer me on though, and you guys kept me going, so thank you so much for that!!

Anyway, I finished the course, which was my only goal. Not only did I finish it, I actually did NOT finish last either! I completed the race in an official time of 41 minutes and 16 seconds, (although my Casio watch [which is standard and calibrated at 20 degree's Celsius], told me that it was 41 minutes, 15 seconds and 98 hundredths). So I am sticking with that.

That gave me a grand position of 90th! Hardly record breaking I know, but when you consider that I could barely walk at the beginning of this year, it is an achievement that I am rather proud of.

You can check the official results at the following link;
http://www.waveneyvalley.org/results/2009/Senior%20Scores%20Results%202009.pdf

What I am even more proud of though, is you. Your contributions have massed an astounding £1,370.82. With a gift aid donation of £374.63, the total is a staggering £1,745.45, that's one thousand, seven hundred and forty five pounds and 45p.

That truly is a remarkable amount, far, far more than I had ever dreamed of raising. I am sure that The Davenport Trust, and all those helped by them truly, value your contribution. And, I know for a fact my brother Sean simply would not believe it.

Anyway, as a final thank you to you al

Enjoying a pint after the race, innit

Paul is raising money for The Davenport Trust:
The Davenport Trust The Davenport Trust is a new Norfolk charity set up to help people of all ages to recognise and deal with the symptoms of depression, an illness from which, unbelievably, one if four of us suffers.

The Trust takes its name from Shaun Davenport, a 17 year-old student at Hewett School, Norwich, who faced a bright future, yet took his own life in January 2003. It is widely understood that Shaun suffered from depression.

The pointlessness of this single, tragic event, gave birth to The Davenport Trust, whose principle work is to publish helpful books, at regular intervals, containing writings by all age groups which chronicle personal views on depression and how it can be combated.
