Rebecca's Personal Message:
Thank you for visiting this online fundraising page.
I've decided to swim the channel, but since I would probably drown/swallow a lot of industrial waste/get hit by a tanker, if I did it all at once, I thought it probably best to do it in stages (and in a pool)!
The Channel is 22 miles. I'm doing this in the University pool, which is 25 meters. Each mile is equivelant to 64 lengths, which means I need to do 1416 lengths in total. So far I've done 248 lengths, which equates to 3.8 miles (I'll update this as I go along)
9/9/2011: First update! Thanks to those who have donated already - it's really spurring me on! I've now done 5.4 lengths and hope to get it up to 7 by Sunday, which would mean I'm slightly ahead of my original target (which was to do a mile every two sessions). I'm about to enter the shipping lanes though, so may have to spend a little time playing dodgems with oil tankers!
11/9/2011: I'd set myself a mini target of reaching 7 miles by Sunday, and I've DONE IT! Having done 66 lengths today (just over a mile), I have now done 470 lengths in total, and reached 7.3 miles. I'm now officially 1/3rd of my way! I really need your support, as I have a feeling the next section will be the toughest!
12/9/2011: I've done 12 days of swimming now, and I never thought I'd be saying it, but I've reached mile NINE. I even did a double dip today - starting the morning by doing 76 lengths, and then going back for another 30 this afternoon! Back at work from Tuesday, so your support means even more, as it'll spur me on to get into the pool after a long day at work. I may not be David Walliams, but I am SO determined to crack this!
15/9/2011: HALFWAY STAGE! Yes, that's right, I've reached 11 miles! So it's all downhill from now on! A massive thank you to all those who have sponsored me already - it really does mean a lot, and is a real incentive to make me get back in the pool after a day at work. So that's 15 days of swimming done .... I wonder if I could do the second half in less? There's only one way to find out. Just keep swimming!
18/9/2011: I keep chipping away at that big block of lengths that is stretching out in front of me, and I've made it to 13 miles, which means that the total left is in single figures! Thanks to all those who have donated. It's a wonderful feeling to watch that little swimmer move steadily forwards. Just like me!
20/9/2011: I never expected to reach my target of £500 for my charities, and thanks to everyone's generosity - I have! So - to spur me on, I've set the bar a little higher to £750. It'd be lovely to be able to reach this new target before I finish. I've got 8 miles to go (having just done 80 lengths this evening), so your donations will drive me forward!
21/9/2011: I'm into the final third as I reach mile 15 (7 to go), and it's really getting hard. I won't bore you all with my littany of woe, but just be aware that every time you donate it makes me determined to get back in the pool - however sick I am of swimming.
26/9/2011: Back in the pool after a few days off due to a swimming injury, and have determined to get this done by Sunday. This means 6 days of 70 lengths, plus a little dip on Sunday. Thank you all so much for the support given already. I know I keep saying this, but it really does mean a lot!
27/9/2011: I'm a little dizzy. I can't quite determine whether this is due to the water in my ears, or the overwhelming generosity of everyone sponsoring me! Thank you very much. You may have noticed I've set the funding target a little higher too! I've got around 4.8 miles to go now, so the Calais harbour is slowly coming into focus. Just 312 lengths to go now!
29/9/2011: I'm really storming along at the moment! So determined to finish this before the end of the week that I'm reaching new records for my length total. 86 is the new high - wonder if I can go higher. Yesterday I discovered what it might have been like to dodge tankers, as there were 16 people in the slow lane. I only have 2.2 miles to go now!
30/9/2011: I'm nearly there!!!! Just 74 lengths to go and then I've reached Calais, and the challenge will be done!
1/10/2011: Well - that's it! 80 lengths under my swimming hat this morning and I am offically FINISHED! Huge thanks to everyone for your support over the past month; I seriously think I wouldn't have done it without you. Now, as the French might say .... bien, c'était amusement - où est le pub le plus proche?
I am, of course, doing this for charity. I'm splitting any donations I get between Comic Relief, and Molly's Library, which is a project set up by the students of Somerville, and which provides books and education to children and adults in Cape Coast, Ghana.
Making a donation through CharityGiving is simple. charitygiving.co.uk is operated by The Dove Trust, a charity with almost 30 years' experience of helping individuals, charities and good causes globally, so your giving is safe and secure.
CharityGiving will reclaim gift aid tax on your donation (if you are a UK taxpayer), meaning any donation is worth around 25% more. They also charge less than most other fundraising websites, so more money goes to this great cause!
Thanks again for your support! I'll get back to the pool now!
