Richard's Personal Message:
Sierra Leone is a wonderful and beautiful place, but on my journeys there I meet too many kids who have never had a decent chance to learn.
Most schools charge unaffordable fees and offer little in return. EducAid Sierra Leone was started by people who were fed up with sponsoring kids at schools which offered them only a third class education. EducAid's founders felt that children deserve something better.
EducAid (www.educaid.org.uk) offers young people a unique chance to learn. It doesn’t charge fees, welcomes people of all backgrounds and attainments, and promises them a real education in exchange for hard work. Many of its students have returned to school after their studies have been interrupted by a host of social factors including war, poverty and gender. EducAid works hard to give students, particularly young women, a second chance.
No one wastes money on school uniforms, and the schools may look a bit rough, but the team imbue EducAid's 6 schools with a total commitment to education. EducAid now outperforms Sierra Leone's top schools, with three students winning places to medical school.
As one student told me, “in other schools, you copy, copy, copy. At EducAid, the teachers help you to pull it out of your own head!”
All too often, EducAid’s students fall sick, and sometimes die of diseases that would be prevented or cured elsewhere. Far too many of Sierra Leone’s children die young. One place that is working hard to change that is the Ola During Children’s Hospital. The Welbodi Partnership (www.welbodipartnership.org) has helped the Children’s Hospital come a long way since 2006 when a young British medical student found it a terrible place of neglect, where children died alone. The Welbodi Partnership has brought volunteer nurses, doctors and management specialists from all around the world, to help the hospital’s staff to make improvements.
So EducAid will pay half of all your donations to Welbodi Partnership.
It needn’t cost much. £10 keeps a child in school for a month. £5 would pay for oxygen for a child. It's very easy to do on this site. If you don't want to reveal your generosity to all and sundry, just put something silly in the "display name" box.
PS both charities insist that every penny possible is spent in Sierra Leone. "CharityGiving" is run by charity for charity. It's a very convenient way to manage the money side, but unfortunately it takes a small cut. I have therefore spoken with the Galactic HQ of Mellor Ways Limited, and Mrs Johnson says that we will pick up the tab for all the charges made by CharityGiving. So all your pennies will go to Welbodi and EducAid. Go on: make us pay! However, if you're Bill Gates, and want to save Mellor Ways from bankruptcy, you can also send EducAid your payment at https://www.charitychoice.co.uk/donation.asp?ref=158662
