Page for: Southwark City Tennis Club Our Personal Message:
Southwark City Tennis Club is a community club working in six venues in some of the most deprived wards in England and Wales. Since 2005 we have given nearly 20,000 young people their first taste of tennis. The young people have responded with older teenagers now training for their Level 1 and Level 2 coaching courses to help train up the next generation.
As part of our work we have found some exceptional young players but are finding that we cannot provide enough support to allow them to fulfil their potential. One example is Michael.
Michael Mhangami is ten years old and has been playing tennis since the age of three and he loves the game. He started competing at Southwark City Tennis Cluband Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) tournaments aged four. Since then he has amassed over 500 medals and trophies. Michael is currently British 10&U champion. His past victories include Aegon National Winter Masters, Aegon Clay Court National champion, Aegon British junior National champion, a Multi Grand Prix (16 best national players’ tournament) winner. He receives part funding from the LTA under the Matrix programme for talented children but this does not cover even the basic costs. His key strengths are a strong serve, strong will to win and mental resilience.
Funds donated to this page will be used (with no administrative costs or deductions) to provide support for travel, entries and coaching for a group of talented young tennis players.

We are raising money for Southwark City Tennis Club:
SCTC are a non-profit organisation devoted to encourage access to tennis within the local community with a particular emphasis on children, we have been active since 2002 but really got going following the refurbishment of 7 courts at Burgess Park in 2004. We are LTA Clubmark accredited and were selected as a Beacon Club for our work in the local community and with disability groups.
We work in the north of Southwark in public parks Burgess Park, Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park and Tanner Street Park and other venues such as the Bradfield Youth Club in Peckham. We continue this work year round and have built up a base of around 250 junior players playing regularly including to national standard. In addition, we work with about 12 schools a year to introduce and popularise tennis with pathways back to the club. An example is teenagers who we have sponsored to do their coaching courses and are now helping on the programme. In a full year we work with over 3,000 children. We ensure broad access by keeping fees to £1 per coached session with a number of free sessions.
Offering tennis to children allows them to keep fit and healthy, improves concentration and coordination and teaches them a skill that they can enjoy their whole lives.
We can only provide our service with the support of a large number of volunteers and supporters and your donation would be greatly appreciated.

Brilliant article in the Times today. The little boy in the photo seems to be having a great time! Hope Michael Mhangami makes it to Florida.

The Club is doing a great job. This campaign is going to benefit a number of kids as well as providing an inspiration for the younger ones to aspire to. Keep up the good work!
