Vignesh's Personal Message:
Hi, Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.
I am raising funds for a trip to Tanzania and Kenya to help make a difference to the lives of families living in extreme poverty and in slums. During the trip, I will be staying with Masai families, sharing their way of life and customs and trekking up Mount Meru (14,980 ft).
There are five main challenges which I aim to complete, four community and one physical. These include the following:
Challenge 1: Mswakini & Lokisale School District
This constitutes our main challenge and we will be spending the majority of our time in this area, taking part in everyday Masai village life in addition to project work. We aim to finance the provision of a ‘Bush Clinic’ providing a health screening and ongoing regular clinic for these remote communities in the Tarangire Bush.
Challenge 2: Lokisale School (Solar energy)
Lokisale School was built by the 2008 Challenge Worldwide participants and provided a much needed education facility in the region. Linking with the charity ‘Solar Aid’ we are planning to install Solar Charging equipment in the school building and community kitchen, which will provide lighting to the classrooms and solar ovens to the kitchen.
Challenge 3: Lake Natron Community
One of the most remote and hostile regions, climate wise, in Tanzania. Our aim is to provide funds to support a food programme for the school children, some of whom walk up to 10k to attend school each day. We also plan to provide a water conservation facility as the water from the Lake is so high in minerals; it is damaging the health of the community. Our presence will be to ‘launch’ the new facility as well as engage in rural Masai life.
Challenge 4: Kibera Slums - Nairobi
Continuance of Feeding Programme for undernourished children St Lazarus School, Kibera Slums, Nairobi
Currently 120 children (many orphaned and suffering from HIV) are being fed a daily balanced diet during their ‘school’ day in the slums courtesy of funds provided by the Challenge group of 2007 & 2008. The extra meat, fruit and daily glass of milk has made a tremendous difference to the health of the children who have come to depend upon this lifeline.
We wish to continue the good work for another year at least. The reports from the school teachers on the children’s progress in terms of concentration, attendance, general academic ability and physical improvement have been astounding. Our funding potentially enables these children to have a future.
Just think, for the cost of a pint of beer and packet of crisps, a slum child can be fed for a week and be given a lifetime of hope. . Challenge 5 (Physical): Climb of Mount Meru (active volcano @ 4,566 metres high)
As part of our commitment to our community projects and fund-raising, we are attempting a 3 day climb of Africa’s third highest mountain. This stands in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro and considered by some, to be tougher to climb. This will be a massive test of strength, endurance, determination and commitment to our fund-raising targets.
