Sam's Personal Message:
Thank you for visiting my Wildcat Challenge page - having you here is PURRFECT!
Warning - this challenge is wild, and it may grow a tail as well as claws and teeth!

Making a donation through CharityGiving.co.uk is simple. Operated by The Dove Trust, a charity with over 27 years' experience of helping good causes globally, this means your giving is safe and secure (and they charge less than most other fundraising websites, so more money goes to this great cause!)

PLEASE ALLOW GIFT AID AS IT MAKES A MASSIVE DIFFERENCE TO YOUR CONTRIBUTION. CharityGiving will reclaim gift aid tax on your donation (if you are a UK taxpayer), meaning any donation is worth around 25% more.

What am I doing?
My Wildcat Challenge is to write 30,000 words in 30 days.
The lengthiest thing I've ever written was a 6,000 word reflective essay over the course of a few months. So why would I put myself forward to write an entire children's book in the month of November? Because the Scottish Wildcats need our help - and they need it NOW. With less than 400 of them left, Britain's last native feline could be extinct within a decade. These unique cats are not feral - the wildcats have lived in the Highlands for over 2 million years, and were revered by the clans - yet it seems most people don't even know they exist!
So I'm writing this first book of a series for children, in which a group of young wildcats start out on a quest to save their species. I want it in every school; available to every child - in Scotland and the UK - who is curious about animals, so that they have a chance to discover that Scottish Wildcats are more than a myth.

And how can you help?
I'm raising money for the Scottish Wildcat Association throughout my writing challenge - so please leave a message of encouragement, along with a few quid, to add fuel to my writing momentum-machine! Even if you can only give £5, and convince 2 of your pals to give £5 too, then it would only take an initial 100 people to help raise £1,500. If you can afford to give more, then on behalf of the wildcats I am deeply grateful for your support. If we raise £4,000 - then that would be help equivalent to £10 for each wildcat remaining.

The most important thing is that as many people as possible learn about these unique animals, giving us a chance to save them before the kids who'll read my book turn 20 and suddenly wildcats remain only in myth.

The first book will be released on the internet for free electronic download in early 2011.

My baby-step target for fundraising is £1,500, however - I know the power of stretch targets - and if we could raise £4,000 (£10 for each remaining wildcat) then our contribution to saving this amazing animal would be so much greater!

Find out more about my Wildcat Challenge and daily progress at www.curiositycats.co.uk. I'd love to hear from you if you know any schools, or any children, who would love to learn about Scottish Wildcats and my book, so please contact me via: sam AT curiositycats.co.uk.

Thank you for supporting my Wildcat Challenge today.

Sam is raising money for Scottish Wildcat Association:
Scottish Wildcat Association We are a charitable organisation dedicated to protecting and conserving Britain's only remaining wild species of feline; the Scottish wildcat.

No angry tabby or feral the wildcat is a genuine wild species of feline; it was here long before we were and long before the domestic cat had even evolved! The Scottish wildcat is infamously the only wild animal to be completely untameable, even when captive reared; they may look a little like your pet cat but these are incredibly tough superpredators, sometimes called the Tiger of the Highlands.

Sadly, our wildcat is critically endangered with only 400 individuals remaining in the wild and barely a handful in the captive breeding population. Currently acting as advocates for the wildcat to the general public and media, we also support conservation research and fund improvements at captive breeding centres. We are about to launch our primary campaign for the next ten years to create a sustainable Wildcat Haven in the Scottish West Highlands where captive bred cats can be released and numbers can rebuild from a few hundred to almost 1000.
