Event: Marathon de Sables (Wed 31st March to Mon 12th April 2010)

Will's Personal Message:

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

At the start of April I will be running the 25th Marathon de Sables in the Moroccan Sahara, dubbed "the toughest foot race on earth". This is a six-day, 254 km (156 mile) ultramarathon. To make things even more challenging (if they weren't already), the running temperature will exceed 40c during the day and I will be carrying all food, water and sleeping gear on my back. This translates into six days of pure pain...

Why, you may ask? After being foolishly roped into it by a good friend, he subsequently pulled out with "knee troubles," so - ever the hero - I thought I would carry on solo. If only I had said no! Cheers Nick.

So much to look forward to though - sleeping with six stinking strangers every night, not washing for 6 days, the daily joy of slicing off my blisters and the dreaded desert camel spiders.

However, the main reasons, other than the almighty personal challenge are to raise as much as I possibly can for my chosen charities, Help for Heroes and SOS Children.

Help for Heroes raises money to support extraordinarily brave members of our Armed Forces who have been badly wounded in the service of their country. They are currently in the process of setting up Personnel Recovery Centres that will provide a “launchpad” to life for seriously wounded or long term sick service personnel, supporting them as they make the transition to a fulfilling future.

SOS Children are the world's largest orphan and abandoned children's charity working in some 124 countries with around 78,000 children living in their care. In addition, they directly support around a million children in the local community with schools, medical centres, and family strengthening programmes. They have a large presence in Haiti and are currently supporting thousands of newly orphaned children from the recent earthquake.

Charity Giving will reclaim gift aid tax on your donation (if you are a UK taxpayer), meaning any donation is worth around 25% more.

So please dig deep and sponsor me as much as you can. All massively appreciated and a great incentive for me to keep going. Thanks again.

Will
